Modern day ship’s watch keeping engineers must be familiar with the main engine major components. The Burmeister & Wain marine diesel engines, their major components, location and functions is explained in this article. Starting from the top plates, we have the cylinder heads. On the next level down are the turbo blowers and air cooler and on the opposite side of the engine are the fuel pumps and scavenge drain valves. Down to the bottom plates, and here we have the engine crankcase doors with explosion relief valves, flywheel, and thrust block. From here the prop drive shaft is supported on bearings before exiting the hull through the stern tube and driving the propeller.
