Technique to Inspect a Marine Crankcase - Components to be Checked

A crankcase inspection forms part of the ships main engine inspection at the end of every voyage. Before opening the crankcase doors, the lube-oil pump must be stopped and the engine given sufficient time to cool down. One of the first things to look for being easily identified is evidence of water in the crankcase, especially so if the pistons are water cooled. The inspection involves checking the security of all bolting and pipework within the crankcase area; below the scavenge space to the bottom end and main bearings.
