Piston Rings
Mar 28, 2023
In ship’s main diesel engines the piston rings are used to seal the piston against the cylinder liner This is to ensure the efficient compression and combustion of the fuel oil. They are produced from a base of pearlitic grey or compact graphic cast iron base alloyed with elements such as chromium, vanadium and nickel to achieve the required mechanical properties. Regular inspection is imperative to maintain optimum total seal by the piston rings; checking the clearances of the rings within the grooves being equally important to the efficient operation of the engine.
